The aim of the University of Genoa in the High V.LO-City project is to evaluate the environmental improvements and cost reductions achieved in implementing hydrogen technologies within partner cities.

In order to be able to perform this analysis, data relating to the environmental impact of the pre-existing buses before the implementation of FCBs have been collected.

This document contains the information received from the Local Public Transport Operators (PTO) involved in the project, namely

  • De Lijn (Flanders, Belgium)
  • Riviera Trasporti ( Liguria, Italy)
  • First Bus (Aberdeen, UK)

The first part of the report briefly describes the three Public Transport Operators and provides a description of the sites in which the fuel cell buses will be operating, along with a description of the current fleet used in the three cities, e.g the buses that will be replaced by the fuel cell buses.

 The first collection exercise consisted of a punctual collection of data on the current buses used by the PTOs – all of them being diesel-powered engines except in Liguria, where trolleybuses are being operating.

At a second stage, average data were collected.

The data chosen for this analysis are similar to the ones used in the testing phase of fuel cell buses. This allows an effective comparison of the benefits expected to be obtained with the use of fuel cell buses compared with the current bus fleets.

The report concludes that fuel cell buses shall offer a clear advantage in term of reduction of polluting emissions, fuel consumption and maintenance service costs.
